A Bit About me
I’m Ediya.
Since going viral on Youtube in 2020, I've facilitated in settings from small groups to a webinar of 1000+ people. These days I focus on video essays, self-paced courses, online and in-person retreats.
Check out my vibes page for random bits of my life and personality.
I was born and raised in Urumqi, East Turkestan (Kazakh, Uyghur, Tatar heritage). I moved to Canada when I was 8.
I've been meditating since I was 16. I'm 31 now.
I started because I was a depressed, socially anxious kid looking for a way out, and meditation seemed like the thing to do. For years, I found solace in guided meditations on Youtube.
My first formal training was a yoga teacher training at 19 where I discovered a love for non-dual philosophy, meditation, and tarot. I have been training and teaching ever since.
At 23, while living in Bali and barely making ends meet, I tried everything on the spiritual menu: daily yoga classes, ecstatic dances, kirtans, cacao ceremonies, tantra trainings, and whatever workshop I could find.
I was convinced that if I just practised more, something would finally break open. The truth was that I was dysregulated, ashamed, and pushing myself too hard without any true sense of what I was actually striving for.
I was in a desperate search for meaning. And the cycle was always the same: I would find a belief system or practice that seemed to answer all my questions, full-heartedly believe in it, until the hope slowly wore off, and then the whole thing would just end up looking embarrassingly absurd. The nihilism phase that followed always felt more depressing than the one before.
At 25, I experienced an awakening—a significant shift to my baseline consciousness (Kensho/stream-entry). It didn’t solve everything, but I started seeing through thoughts, and no longer experienced my sense of self or beliefs as fixed or inherently real.
As an immigrant child, I've never neatly fit the narrative, and since the shift, I've stopped trying to. It's cost me the belonging and credentials that come with picking a lane, but this is really the truest thing about me.
Without a self, personal improvement and spiritual identity lost their appeal. Both fortify fundamental illusions of reality, and neither reduce any suffering.
Everything I practice are maps and avenues now, not things to build an identity around or believe in. The only thing I’m concerned with is the question of reducing suffering, without having to lie to myself about it.
Beliefs don’t work, Here’s what actually works:
The first is learning to look for the truth in your immediate felt experience. The second is learning to read meaning into your life without needing to believe in it.
The lens that informs my work
When we learn to see through mental constructs, we can discover a much richer world within our sensate experience that is grounded in fundamental wisdom about the nature of reality.
Insight Meditation
The nervous system has an intrinsic drive towards survival and optimal health. Healing organically unfolds when we are given the right container, and feel safe enough to remain present with what is arising.
SOMATIC EXPERIENCING
Being witnessed, met, and challenged in relationship is where much of self-inquiry becomes embodied and real. Practices such as Circling can offer opportunities for the nervous system to heal, and build resilience through connection.
CIRCLING & Transformational connection
Myths are not just stories; they distill human experience down to the archetypal patterns that repeat, beyond culture and time. With mythic awareness, we can consciously imbue our lives with meaning through pattern-work.
Mythic animism
